Real Stories: My First Year as a Homeowner

The decision to become a homeowner is a significant milestone. Purchasing a home is a major financial commitment and requires careful consideration and significant amounts of planning. This article reflects on my experience of becoming a homeowner for the first time within the last year.

The most difficult yet important step was to finance my home. I had to evaluate a variety of costings depending on whether it was a new property, renovation or existing residence. After research and calculations, I settled on a mortgage suited to my needs to secure the property.

The next step was to view the property I had chosen. It was love at first sight – I knew that this was the one. I discussed my options with the mortgage broker to ensure that the amount I had chosen as the deposit was the right choice for me and my budget.

Renovations

Once the paperwork had been approved, I started to plan the renovations of my new house. I thought about the colour scheme I wanted, the furniture and decorations that would be suitable and the changes made to the bathrooms and kitchen. I chose to splurge on materials I knew would last for years to come.

The renovations were my favourite part of the process. I remember sanding down the timber floors with my dad and knowing that I had done all the hard work to make my vision come to life.

The Moving Out Process

I was incredibly excited as I was ready to finally move in, however, there was another step I had to go through. I had to set up all the necessary services such as electricity, gas, data and phone line. I had to coordinate with all those parties to make sure they could connect on the same date. This took a bit longer to organise than what I had expected.

The most stressful process of the move was the final paperwork. All documents were required to be checked and signed off. Once this was sorted, I was able to move into my new home.

It was a nerve-wracking time, but I worked through all the issues and am now living comfortably in my new home.

Conclusion

My journey of buying my first home has been an incredibly rewarding experience. After all the hard work, I am now settling and enjoying my home. From the application process to the moving in day, it has taken a lot of organising and time. But I can say that it was all worth it.
